Course Overview

Essential Emergency Response Skills for Clinical Practice Teams

The Level 3 Award in Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis for Adults, Children and Infants in Clinical Practice (RQF) is designed for everyone working within a clinical practice environment, including administration and support staff. Learners do not need to be clinically qualified to complete this course.

This regulated and nationally recognised qualification provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to respond confidently to medical emergencies involving adults, children and infants. Learners will gain the competencies needed to provide Basic Life Support (BLS), safely use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and manage a casualty experiencing suspected anaphylaxis.

The qualification content and learning outcomes are based on the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council UK and guidance from a distinguished panel of experts in emergency medical care.

Successful learners will leave with the confidence and practical skills to respond effectively to life-threatening emergencies within a clinical setting.

Emergency Assessment

• Conducting a scene survey

• Conducting a primary survey on:

• Identifying when CPR should be administered

Basic Life Support (BLS)

• Demonstrating CPR using:

  • Adult manikin

  • Child manikin

  • Infant manikin

• Considerations when administering CPR

Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

• Demonstrating the safe use of an AED on:

  • Adults

  • Children

  • Infants

• Considerations when using an AED during an emergency

Recovery Position

• Recognising when to place a casualty in the recovery position

• Safely placing:

  • An adult in the recovery position

  • A child in the recovery position

  • An infant in the recovery position

• Continually monitoring breathing while the casualty is in the recovery position

Anaphylaxis Management

• Recognising suspected anaphylaxis

• Administering first aid for a casualty experiencing suspected anaphylaxis

• Using an adrenaline auto-injector

Choking

• Demonstrating techniques for managing choking
