Technical Officer – Trees | Exeter

Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm
Pay: £17.85 per hour

Recruitment Unlimited is currently seeking an experienced Technical Officer (Trees) to join a busy Public & Green Spaces – Trees team in Exeter.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a background in arboriculture, tree management, contract supervision, environmental services, green infrastructure or local authority tree services to play a key role in the management and protection of Exeter's trees and green spaces.

The successful candidate will support the Tree Manager with the efficient delivery of the Council's tree management programme, with particular responsibility for contract supervision, tree inspections, work programming, community engagement and administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake tree-related site visits and inspections, investigating issues and determining appropriate action.

  • Manage and prioritise incoming tree enquiries, ensuring responses and follow-up actions are completed efficiently.

  • Liaise with contractors, residents, community groups, councillors, Council staff and external organisations.

  • Organise and monitor cyclical tree works and maintenance programmes.

  • Undertake day-to-day contract administration and contractor supervision.

  • Raise work orders and monitor invoices, payments and financial records.

  • Ensure administrative and financial procedures are followed correctly.

  • Administer the Council's tree inspection regime, supporting effective risk management and quality control.

  • Maintain and update tree management databases and software systems.

  • Monitor inspection records and ensure accurate tree management information is maintained.

  • Assist with the coordination and delivery of the tree planting programme.

  • Support the development of urban and community woodlands.

  • Contribute to Green Infrastructure strategies, environmental initiatives and Net Zero targets.

  • Assist with the promotion and publicity of tree, woodland and environmental issues.

  • Prepare correspondence, reports and other documentation as required.

About You

We are looking for someone who is organised, practical and confident working independently, with a genuine interest in trees, arboriculture, green spaces and environmental management.

You should have:

  • A good general standard of education, ideally to A Level or equivalent.

  • A tree-related qualification at NVQ Level 3 or above, or be working towards one.

  • Experience of tree management, arboriculture, environmental services or grounds/green space management.

  • Experience of maintenance schedules, work programming and systems management.

  • Experience of tree inspections, record keeping and risk management.

  • Experience of contract management or contractor supervision.

  • Experience using GIS, spreadsheets and database systems.

  • An understanding of budget monitoring and financial administration.

  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good report and letter writing abilities.

  • Strong attention to detail and accurate record keeping.

  • The ability to learn new systems and process information quickly.

  • A qualification or experience in Health & Safety and Risk Assessment would be advantageous.
