Rate: £35.00 per hour
Job Type: Full Time | 6-Month Contract
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm

About the Role

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Environmental Protection Officer to join a busy Regulatory Services team on a 6-month contract.

Based at the Barnstaple offices, this is a full-time position offering the opportunity to work across a varied caseload, helping to protect public health and the environment through the delivery of environmental protection services.

Hybrid working may be available by agreement following interview, although attendance at the Barnstaple office will be required on agreed days.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate and respond to environmental protection complaints and enquiries.

  • Carry out inspections, investigations and enforcement activities where appropriate.

  • Provide professional advice relating to environmental protection matters, including planning and licensing consultations.

  • Regulate areas including:

  • Statutory nuisance

  • Air quality

  • Contaminated land

  • Industrial emissions

  • Private water supplies

  • Anti-social behaviour associated with environmental issues

  • Work collaboratively with internal departments and external agencies to deliver effective regulatory services.

  • Prepare reports, notices and legal documentation where required.

  • Manage your own caseload, ensuring work is completed efficiently and within agreed timescales.

About You

To be considered, you will have:

  • A Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Health.

  • Registration with the Environmental Health Registration Board.

  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).

  • Previous experience working within Environmental Protection in a Local Authority.

  • Excellent knowledge of relevant environmental legislation and enforcement procedures.

  • Strong communication, investigation and report writing skills.

  • The ability to manage a varied workload and work independently.

Essential Requirements

  • Full UK Driving Licence.

  • Access to your own vehicle, as travel across the district will be required.

  • Ability to work Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

  • Ability to attend the Barnstaple office on agreed office days, with hybrid working available subject to agreement.
